The struggle to provide a basic meal for some families is even greater this holiday season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Feeding South Dakota is asking the community to make a difference in the lives of those in need by donating money, food or volunteer hours.

“It’s , a time when families get together and we have families who couldn’t put together a meal for their extended family without this help, so that is really what it is all about,” said Shawn Burke, a Development Associate with Feeding South Dakota.

The food pantry has been closed since the hit of the pandemic and now the organization is distributing food from mobile sites, which hosts 12 different locations a month. They are always in need of volunteers for the mobile sites.

“Our regular mobiles, they are happening all the time,” Burke said. “12 different actives in a given month and each one of those takes 12-15 volunteers as well, so we are very volunteer dependent right now to get our work done.”

Burke says that other volunteer hours include 1-4 pm daily, which includes packing backpacks for area students.

Long-time supporters Greg and Pam Sands are offering a dollar for dollar match up to $15,000 for every online donation made from today until November 20.
