Local doctors start Vax to the Max Black Hills Challenge

RAPID CITY, S.D.– 30 percent of South Dakotans have received their COVID-19 vaccine and booster, and a new challenge is working to change that.

The Vax to the Max Black Hills Challenge was started by Dr. Roger and Janice Knutsen, their goal to encourage more people to protect themselves against the virus.

Currently, the vaccine proves to be the most effective form of protection against COVID-19.

Beginning February 2, any resident receiving their first shot and both doses of the vaccine or booster after the starting day will be eligible for monetary incentives. Anyone in Rapid City can pick up the gift cards at the Black Hills Area Community Foundation on St. Joseph Street.

“The great thing about this vaccination drive is that you can get your vaccination or booster anywhere,” Donor Relations Manager Chris Huber said. “And then you can come to the Black Hills Area Community Foundation Monday through Wednesday and pick up a $50 gift card for getting your booster.”

Anyone receiving their first shot and both doses of the vaccine after the starting date will be eligible for a $100 gift card. The gift cards are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

“So, we have 400 gift cards to hand out now. Dr. Roger Knutsen is also putting out a challenge for more people to add donations to this incentive drive,” Huber added. “So, if we get more donations, we’re able to buy more gift cards and give more out to people.”

Residents can also pick up the gift cards at the Sturgis and Custer Public Libraries during their operating hours.
