TERRY PEAK, S.D. — It was quite a turnout.

“This is the very first Pond Skim that we’ve ever had at Terry Peak, so it’s kind of an experiment and we’ve had a heck of a turnout,” said Linda Derosier, Marketing Director for Terry Peak.

Around 100 participants, accompanied by many spectators, attempted to skid across the pond. Derosier said that the plan was to do the event last year, but it was cancelled due to the pandemic.

“Our new General Manager, Bill London, wanted to do this particular event; he’s done with at his ski areas that he’s been at in the past,” Derosier said.

Andrew Pevek of Rapid City was one participant who put his own twist on his ride. At the last second, Pevek re-positioned himself to go over the pond backwards.

“You just kinda think through it, and be like ‘well, this seems about right and you just go for it you know?” Pevek said. “You, uh, you go with the wind.”

For participants and other skiers, it was a great way to put a cap on the season, as the ski area closes for the season on Sunday, April 4.

“These last few weekends, where things have been softening up, you know, you just make the most of it,” Pevek said.

Derosier also thanks the staff of the ski area for their hard work in constructing the pond and said that Terry Peak is holding a costume contest as well as giving away a snowboard and other prizes.
