CUSTER, S.D. — One person is dead, another injured after a shooting in a home near Custer shortly before 10:00 p.m. Friday night. The suspect is also dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a pursuit that ended in Colorado, about 30 miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
The Custer County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a homicide at 9:47 p.m. Friday, at a home on Highway 16, west of Custer. There, they found a deceased adult male. A woman who was also assaulted in the incident had driven herself to the local hospital.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, which is assisting in the investigation, identified a male suspect who had fled the scene.
At about 2:00 a.m. Saturday, the suspect was spotted traveling south on Interstate 25 in Larimer County, Colorado.
According to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, they tried to use spike strips to stop the suspect. The suspect fired at deputies and continued south on the interstate. Deputies eventually used a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver to stop the vehicle. Before deputies could make contact with the driver, he shot himself.
Deputies found a handgun in the pickup. The Larimer County Sheriff's office said deputies did not fire any weapons during the incident. No other injuries were reported.
The Custer County Sheriff's Office and the state DCI are investigating the homicide. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office will investigate the incident there.
The names of the victims in Custer County have not yet been released.
The Larimer County coroner will release the name of the suspect at a later time.
